Assistant City Attorney

The City of Fond du Lac is accepting applications for the position of Assistant City Attorney within the City Attorney/Human Resources Department. This full-time position reports to the City Attorney and serves as the primary backup for the City Attorney. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of legal duties, including labor relations, municipal court prosecution, policy development, and providing legal counsel to various city departments.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Handle municipal court prosecutions and other legal proceedings.
  • Provide legal opinions and advice to the City Council, City Manager, and other city departments.
  • Draft, negotiate, and review contracts, ordinances, and other legal documents.
  • Represent the City in administrative agencies and courts.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing policies related to labor and employment matters.
  • Supervise a legal/HR assistant in cooperation with Human Resources Manager.
  • Manage labor relations
  • Collaborate in workforce planning.
  • Oversee employee safety, welfare, and health with Benefits Coordinator.

Requirements include:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Membership in good standing with the State Bar of Wisconsin.
  • Three to five years of experience in municipal law or labor/human resources/personnel legal matters.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Workday is a plus.

Preferred experience:

  • Public labor relations and municipal prosecution experience.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and perform light physical tasks as needed.

Salary range: We offer a competitive compensation package $93,962 – $109,935 /annually based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
